A chunk of workers in the car rentals business have been laid off due to COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking to our Correspondent Razak Baba in Kumasi on the economic impact of the pandemic on the operations of its members, President of the Car Rentals Association of Ghana, Seth Yeboah Ocran, said laying off workers has become necessary to incur losses.
He however urged members to take advantage of government stimulus package to turnaround their businesses. As the economic impact of the coronavirus spreads across several sectors, operators of car rentals say they have also been adversely affected. According to them, they have had to lay off workers due to low patronage as more people are observing the social distancing protocol and limiting public gatherings.
Majority of those who have been asked to go home are drivers, car detailers, protocol staff, security and those engaged in other related activities. Coupled with this has been the low patronage of car hiring services. The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Association, Mr. Michael Sarpong expressed serious concern about the impact of the pandemic on the car rental business.
The Vice President of the Association, Mr. Akwasi Marfo explains how members can access the stimulus package to boost the car rentals business. The President of the Association, Mr. Seth Yeboah Ocran commended government for the numerous interventions to sustain businesses, particularly the six-month moratorium of principal repayments to entities in the airline and hospitality industries.
